The Challenge

The British Library

The British Library has a rich heritage: an archive of more than 6.5 million recordings of programmes, music, speeches, and ambient sounds covering a period of time from 1880 to the present day.
All this was in danger of being compromised both by the gradual disappearance of the media on which the material was recorded and by the wear and tear of time.

MEDIAMONITOR, a Cedat85 group company specialised in audio and video content management, was chosen to provide the technology needed to transcribe and archive the collection’s radio broadcasts using a solution based on Speech-to-Text technology.
Thanks to this solution, the entire archive will be more easily accessible to end users. “

Cedat85's Solution

MEDIAMONITOR worked on this project together with the system integrator T-Pro.

The first phase involved the collection and transcription of the entire archive; once this step was completed, the archiving of the broadcasts of 50 national, local and community radio stations began.

Today, 4 years after its inception, ‘Save Our Sounds’ is British Library’s one of the most successful projects.
